Great Day to be Alive

It’s funny how songs trigger memories of my Sissy. I remember listening to this song while riding home from our local dirt track on a hot August night in 2003. Brittany said this song made her happy which was pretty damn humorous considering the fact that Brittany disliked country music. In that era she listened to a lot of Sublime and Rob Zombie. We cranked the radio and jammed out to this song like a bunch of little nerds.

It’s A Great Day To Be Alive
Travis Tritt

I got rice cooking in the microwave
I got a three day beard I don’t plan to shave
It’s a goofy thing but I just gotta say, hey,
I’m doing alright

Yeah I think I’ll make me some home-made soup
I’m feeling pretty good and that’s the truth
It’s neither drink nor drug induced, no,
I’m just doing alright

And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shining
When I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good

It’s been fifteen years since I left home
I said good luck to every seed I’d sown
Gave it my best and then I left it alone
I hope they’re doing alright

Now I look in the mirror and what do I see
A lone wolf there staring back at me
Long in the tooth but harmless as can be
Lord I guess he’s doin’ alright

And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shining
When I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good

Sometimes it’s lonely, sometimes it’s only me
And the shadows that fill this room
Sometimes I’m falling, desperately calling
Howling at the moon, ah-ooh, ah-ooh

Well, I might go get me a new tattoo
Or take my old Harley for three day cruise
Might even grow me a fu man chu

And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shining
When I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good

And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shining
When I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neighborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good, ah-ooh, oh yeah

Jealous of the Angels by Jenn Bostic

JENN BOSTIC
Jealous Of The Angels Lyrics

I didn’t know today would be our last
Or that I’d have to say goodbye to you so fast
I’m so numb, I can’t feel anymore
Prayin’ you’d just walk back through that door
And tell me that I was only dreamin’
You’re not really gone as long as I believe

There will be another angel
Around the throne tonight
Your love lives on inside of me,
And I will hold on tight
It’s not my place to question,
Only God knows why
I’m just jealous of the angels
Around the throne tonight

You always made my troubles feel so small
And you were always there to catch me when I’d fall
In a world where heroes come and go
Well God just took the only one I know
So I’ll hold you as close as I can
Longing for the day, when I see your face again
But until then

God must need another angel
Around the throne tonight
Your love lives on inside of me
And I will hold on tight
It’s not my place to question
Only God knows why
I’m just jealous of the angels
Around the throne tonight

Singin’ hallelujah
Hallelujah
Hallelujah
I’m just jealous of the angels
Around the throne
Tonight

3 YEARS

In Memory of Brittany Gilman

It seems impossible that you have been gone from our lives for 3 whole years. It’s unreal… every time I think of you my mind goes straight back to that phone call. The one that changed our family forever. I can’t help but remember the tragic circumstances of your last few years here on Earth. It breaks my heart that my sweet Sissy never had a chance at happiness. I love you! I miss you! I miss your sarcastic humor. I miss your smile. I miss the smell of your hair each time we hugged good bye.

* truth – every single relationship I have has changed. Some for the better. Some for the worse. Some I have let go of because I no longer have the time or energy to waste on negativity. My Sister’s passing has changed every aspect of my life. It has changed my relationships with my Mom, Step Dad, Husband, Children, Friends and extended family.

2 Years and We Miss You More and More Each Day

This post has also been posted on my personal blog Missy’s Crafty Mess

Two years ago today at approximately 7:05 PM my beautiful 24 year old Sister Brittany tragically died in a single car accident. Brittany is greatly missed by our entire family. We have a huge gaping hole in our family without her here with us. Nothing is the same. Her death has completely turned our lives upside down and yet the world has failed to stop and notice our grief.

I love you so much Sissy

These are just a few pictures that I have on my computer. I really need to get a scanner so that I can share more of our childhood photos. The photos are shared from newest to oldest. In fact the first photo was a selfie that Brittany took a few days before she passed away.

Forever 24 – 2015

From my personal blog…

Missy's Crafty Mess

Today would have been my Sister‘s 26th birthday. Instead of celebrating another year with her I am donating 24 hats to Scarves for Troops in her memory.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRITTANY
I WISH YOU WERE HERE
I MISS YOU SO MUCH
💖 I LOVE YOU SISSY

Forever 24 -2015

Patterns I used:

I think that the Scarves for Troops program which is ran by Operation Gratitude is one of the best charities out there. When I started donating to Scarves for Troops I was looking for something that I could donate handmade goods to simply because I was bored and wanted to make something that I could give back to society. After my Grandfather who served in the Navy during the Korean War passed away from cancer I wanted to do more charity work for Veterans. Then my Sister

Will The Circle Be Unbroken by The Carter Family & Jonny Cash

I personally think this is one of the best song that has ever been written and I hope that someday it’s played at my own funeral. Not that I am planning on dying anytime soon… I’m just saying that I love the song.

“Will The Circle Be Unbroken”

I was standing by the window
On one cold and cloudy day
When I saw the hearse come rolling
For to carry my mother away

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky

I said to the undertaker
Undertaker please drive slow
For this lady you are carrying
Lord I hate to see her go

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky

Oh, I followed close behind her
Tried to hold up and be brave
But I could not hide my sorrow
When they laid her in the grave

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky

I went back home, the home was lonesome
Since my mother, she was gone
All my brothers and sisters crying
What a home so sad and alone

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky

We sang songs of childhood
Hymns of faith that made us strong
Ones that mother Maybelle taught us
Hear the angels sing along

Will the circle be unbroken
Bye and bye Lord, bye and bye
There’s a better home awaiting
In the sky Lord, in the sky

Billy Bob Thornton grieves the loss of his brother…

I’d like to share Dee’s post so I will post the link to her original post   Please check out Dee’s original post.

My sweet blogging friend Dee writes the blog Mourning Amy Marie about the loss of her beautiful daughter who passed a way just a few weeks before my Sister Brittany. Today she posted this video of an interview by Billy Bob Thornton about the loss of his younger brother. I am re-blogging her post because I want y’all to understand the depth of loss and the continuous impact that it has on those who grieve. Our losses are permanent scars on our souls. It’s always there and it’s never going to go away.

“HE DIED AND I’VE NEVER TRUSTED HAPPINESS SINCE”

“I’M 50% HAPPY AND 50% SAD”

“I’VE NEVER BEEN THE SAME SINCE MY BROTHER DIED”

“YOU WONT EVER GET OVER IT”

“I’LL BE SAD AND MELANCHOLY ABOUT THAT FOREVER”

If I Die Young by The Band Perry

This song makes me think of my Mother and the path she’s walking through her own grief

“If I Die Young”

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in a river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh, uh oh

Lord make me a rainbow, I’ll shine down on my mother
She’ll know I’m safe with you when she stands under my colors, oh,
And life ain’t always what you think it ought to be, no
Ain’t even grey, but she buries her baby

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I’ve had just enough time

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I’ve had just enough time

And I’ll be wearing white, when I come into your kingdom
I’m as green as the ring on my little cold finger,
I’ve never known the lovin’ of a man
But it sure felt nice when he was holdin’ my hand,
There’s a boy here in town, says he’ll love me forever,
Who would have thought forever could be severed by…

…the sharp knife of a short life, oh well?
I’ve had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I’ll wear my pearls
What I never did is done

A penny for my thoughts, oh, no, I’ll sell ’em for a dollar
They’re worth so much more after I’m a goner
And maybe then you’ll hear the words I been singin’
Funny when you’re dead how people start listenin’

If I die young, bury me in satin
Lay me down on a bed of roses
Sink me in the river at dawn
Send me away with the words of a love song

Uh oh (uh, oh)
The ballad of a dove (uh, oh)
Go with peace and love
Gather up your tears, keep ’em in your pocket
Save ’em for a time when you’re really gonna need ’em, oh

The sharp knife of a short life, oh well
I’ve had just enough time

So put on your best, boys, and I’ll wear my pearls.
